Started during the war that divided the United States, building the first transcontinental railroad was completed after the Civil War and announced the new era of unity and hope for the United States. But before the train was even launched, there are many obstacles to overcome, and that has never been built is a tribute to the resilience and initiative.
The discovery of gold in California in 1849, propelled to the status of a sudden that has attracted much interest because was considered a barren wasteland into a career where people live and act. Suddenly, plans for a transcontinental railroad that some years earlier had been ridiculed as unrealistic and too ambitious, have been revived as an act of Congress, 1853. However, conflicts of interest between North and South have prevented agreement on a the route. Ironically, it was not until the outbreak of the Civil War, the transcontinental railroad that became a reality. In Southern opposition removed from their positions in the federal government following the secession, the Senate and House of Representatives approved Minutes of the Pacific Railroad in 1862 and 1864, which eventually paved the way for the construction of the railway. Under this legislation, the railways have been granted the use of building materials and land by 20 million acres and has received government backing for loans totaling 60 million dollars.
The land was held in January 1863 in Sacramento, California for the Central Pacific Railroad in December of that year, Missouri River, near the cliffs of Omaha, Nebraska, by the Union Pacific Railroad; trigger competition the two companies to see who could finish first.
The two companies have had to overcome many problems and challenges, including equipment and shortage of labor, before the task was completed. However, despite all the logistical problems and the frequent attacks and disruption of the Americans, the railroad was completed after six years and remains one of the largest engineering projects ever undertaken in the United States.
At 12:20 am on Monday, May 10, 1869 at Promontory Point, Utah, including the latest outbreak marked the completion of transcontinental railroad. The official ceremony was witnessed by close 600 workers and dignitaries, a bottle of champagne in a broken equality bay and a huge applause telegram was sent to the nation, containing a single word, â € € ™ ~ Done.
Once completed, the rail instantly propelled its west coast, in Sacramento, the terminal of its importance. The future of California capital act as a distribution point for construction, while the railroad is under construction and once saw a massive influx of prospectors and settlers from the East. Consequently, the city experienced a construction boom that led to the construction of many houses, civic buildings, shops and href = "http://www.embassysuites.com/en/es/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=SACESES"> hotels in Sacramento, which are indispensable to a temporary home of the race before of the settlers, who decided at its final location in California.
